Steps to Spot Swimming Pool Leaks
Every swimming pool normally loses a certain amount of water through splash – outs and evaporation. However, if you add over two inches of water to the swimming pool every week to stabilize the water level, you need to think about its condition more carefully. Losing over two inches of water is not good and it is a sign that a leak exists in your swimming pool.
If you want to discover whether there is a leak in your swimming pool, you should inspect the filter, pump, heater and its valves. Then, it would be advisable to walk around the ground to discover any wet parts. If you turn the pump on and off, you may check if there is water spraying. Of course, two or three water drips will not discover the source of the leak.
Deterioration and plumbing malfunctioning can cause pool leaks.
Two simple items can help in detecting a pool leak. They are a marker and a bucket. The procedure for tracking and discovering a leak is rather simple. An empty bucket is placed on the second step of the swimming pool. It is filled with enough water to match the level of water in the pool. The level of the water in the bucket needs to be marked with the marker. After that, the recirculating pump of the swimming pool and all auto-refill devices which are connected to the pool are turned off.
After 24 hours, the level of the water in the bucket should be compared to the level of the water in the pool. If both levels are lower but still even with each other, there is a loos because of the evaporation. But, if the water level in the bucket is higher than the pool level after 24 hours, there is a leak in the swimming pool.
Another test should be performed, too. It is with the pump off the pool on instead of off. After 24 hours the water levels in the bucket and pool are checked. If the level of the water in the pool is higher than the pool water that circulates under pressure, then a leak repair is needed for one or more plumbing components.
